Marietta Man Killed by Cobb Police at Hotel

Cobb Police say the man produced a handgun during an altercation with officers at the Extended Stay Hotel on Powers Ferry Road.

A Marietta man was shot and killed by a Cobb Police officer at a Powers Ferry Road hotel Friday morning in what authorities are calling an act of self-defense.

Cobb Police Officer Michael Bowman said John Alan Massey, 30, was pronounced dead in his room at the Extended Stay Hotel in the 2200 block of Powers Ferry Road shortly after police arrived on the scene around 10:15 a.m. Friday.

Bowman said Massey was shot after he produced a handgun during a physical altercation in the hotel room with two uniformed officers, who feared for their lives.

The officers had gone to Massey's room to investigate a stolen motorcycle that was found in the hotel parking lot, Bowman said.

Both officers have been placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation continues, Bowman said.

He said anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Cobb Police at 770-499-3945.
