Shooter Charged With Aggravated Assault After East Cobb Standoff

A 57-year-old Cobb County man faces multiple charges of aggravated assault on a police officer after facing off Tuesday with a SWAT team.

COBB COUNTY, GA — A shooter barricaded in his East Cobb home Tuesday has been charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and reckless conduct.

Donald Welborn Jr., 57, is being held in the Cobb County Jail without bond after surrendering following a four-hour standoff, which started when Welborn fired at Cobb Police officers answering a neighbor’s call.

Those shots led to the arrival of the Cobb Police SWAT team and an “extended negotiation” with a person inside the house at 2518 Kingsley Drive, according to spokesperson Sgt. Wayne Delk.

When Welborn emerged peacefully from the house, it also led to eight counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and three counts of reckless conduct, according to multiple media reports.
