Lawrenceville, GA -- On Saturday, April 20, 2013 Congressman Rob Woodall (R-GA) joined Seventh District of Georgia students and their parents to honor their participation in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition.
Congressman Woodall talked about how much he enjoyed meeting the young artists at Saturday’s showcase and how he is inspired by their work and enthusiasm. “Thank you to all of the students who participated in this wonderful opportunity, the judges who gave of their time and talents, and the good people at the Hudgens Center for the Arts who opened their doors to us. When I see the talent these young people have, I am simply amazed,” Woodall said.
The first-place winner is David Kim from Lambert High School in Forsyth County. His work, “Reminiscence,” is about a memory of David’s when he was around six years old and lived in Minnesota. He states that he was young when he lived there, but he still remembers the beautiful and majestic nature he experienced living in Minnesota. He goes on to say that the scenery was so captivating that he can still remember it today.

According to the judges, David had an amazing control of medium, and his piece was beautiful and very professional. Mr. Kim will receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Art Institute of Atlanta, and may be eligible to receive a minimum of $3,000 per year from SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design scholarship should he apply and be accepted for admission.
The second-place winner is Ji Yeon Park from North Gwinnett High School and the third place winner is Yi Young (Sally) Kim from North Gwinnett High School. Miss Park and Miss Kim will also receive scholarships to the Atlanta Art Institute in the amounts of $5,000 and $2,500 respectively.

There were 55 art submissions for this year’s Congressional Art Competition and they all exemplified the talent and potential of the young people here in the Seventh District.
The art submissions came from nine high schools located in the Seventh District:
- North Gwinnett High School
- Brookwood High School
- Lambert High School
- Lanier High School
- Meadowcreek High School
- Peachtree Ridge High School
- Phoenix High School
- Pinecrest Academy High School
- West Forsyth High School
Six judges assisted in selecting the winning artwork:
- Kathy Fincher
- Karron Denaple
- Kay Montgomery
- Raye Varney
- Janet Willy
- Janet Munchak
Mr. Kim’s artwork will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for one year, and he has been invited to participate in the opening gala in Washington, D.C., on June 26, 2013.
