LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Eighteen of Gwinnett County’s 156 precincts more than one in 10 — opened after 7 a.m. for Tuesday’s primaries because of late delivery of voting equipment. The delays led to a judge holding 17 of those locations open past 7 p.m.

Two precincts opened late because the equipment hadn't been set up by 7 a.m. At another 16 precincts, the equipment hadn't even been delivered by 7 a.m.

Problems stemmed from using a private company to deliver the new touchscreen equipment, according to county spokesperson Joe Sorenson.

In the past, Gwinnett County had used rented trucks and off-duty firefighters to deliver the equipment, Sorenson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This time, though, the county contracted a private firm to deliver the system, which included touchscreens, printers and ballot scanners.

Sorenson said in a statement that equipment was delivered late because of “equipment staging issues and coordination issues between Election workers and the trucking company.”

Miscommunication, inefficient delivery routes and trucks too small to accommodate the equipment all contributed to the delays, according to Sorenson.

The county plans to add another truck and rethink how it delivers the machines in time for November’s general election.
