Forum Offers Final Opportunity To Address School Board Candidates

Less Than One Month Before the November Election

Lawrenceville, Ga., Tuesday, October 16, -- Candidates running for school board in Gwinnett districts 2 and 4 will meet with the public and discuss their vision for education in the county.

In the upcoming November election, Gwinnett County will choose two new school board members for the first time in 13 years. The current board members, Daniel Seckinger (District 2) and Robert McClure (District 4) retire this year. Gwinnett County Public Schools is the largest school district in the state and their board of education often makes policy decisions with implications which impact districts across the state. The board is responsible for an annual budget of slightly more than $2 billion.

Parents in Gwinnett County are encouraged to attend the forum so they can make an informed decision. The Forum will have prepared questions and a moderator, but audience members will have an opportunity to submit questions as well.

"Our elected school board members have unquestionable power and input regarding educational strategies that will forever have implications on the success of GCPS diverse student population. Though we as parents are busy, it's imperative that we take time to interact and evaluate those we entrust with the future of tomorrow leaders." said Marlyn Tillman, of Gwinnett SToPP, a grassroots parent advocacy group sponsoring the event.

Gwinnett County Public Schools has a map of electoral districts available here. If attendees are unsure of their voter district, they are still encouraged to attend. Per the GCPS website: An individual's residence, not the school attended, is used to determine which School Board member represents a particular resident. Please review the 2017-18 listing of GCPS Schools by Board Member for more information.
