Georgia 20th Fattest State in America

Georgia is the 20th most obese state in the nation, according to a newly released study F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2013.

According to the report, Georgia’s adult obesity rate is 29.1 percent; tied with Pennsylvania. A total of 13 states have adult obesity rates above 30 percent.


The state with the most obese adults: Louisiana at 34.7 percent. Guess who had the fittest Americans: Colorado, where just 20.5 percent were obese.

Other data:

Age: The incidence of obesity increases for baby boomers, those persons ages 49 to 67. It is 34.6 percent in Georgia, ranking the state at No. 18.

Gender: Georgia’s obesity rate is 27.7 percent for men and 30.6 percent for women. In general, men's obesity rates are increasing faster than women.

High School Students: Some 15 percent of high school students are obese in Georgia. Only sevens states had worse rates than this.

Extreme Obesity: Among children ages 2 to 19, more than 5.1 percent of males and 4.7 percent of females are now severely obese across the nation. ("Severely obese" is defined as a Body Mass Index of 40 or more, which is roughly equivalent to being more than 100 pounds overweight. )
