Threat Cleared At Georgia Gwinnett College After Lockdown

An alert Thursday morning instructed students and staff to lock and barricade doors after a nearby shooting.

GWINNETT, GA — Students and staff at Georgia Gwinnett College were allowed to resume normal operations Thursday morning after a nearby shooting led to a temporary campus lockdown.

The college went on lockdown Thursday morning after a report of a "violent threat" on campus, the college said on social media and on its website.

In a news release, Gwinnett County Police Department confirmed a shooting had occurred near the GGC campus in the 800 block of Walther Boulevard. One person had been shot in front of an apartment and was found dead, police said.

The college later confirmed the shooting had taken place at Sugar Mill Apartments. Authorities at the time were on the lookout for a shooting suspect described as a black man wearing a white tee-shirt and dirty sweatpants, the college said in an alert. The man was believed to be armed.

The college said police will continue to patrol campus throughout the day. It's unclear as of writing if the shooter has been taken into police custody.

According to a notice posted on the college's website around 10:40 a.m., the college was on a "hard lockdown." An earlier alert sent to students and staff instructed them to enter any nearby building and to lock and barricade doors.

Gwinnett County Transit on Thursday morning also announced on Twitter that its Route 45 bus will not provide service in the area until the threat is cleared.
