Teenage Drivers Issued a Driver's License Without a Road Test

Nearly 20,000 teenagers have upgraded their permit to a driver's license. Will their inexperience behind the wheel put them at risk?

Amid the Coronvirus outbreak and in efforts to support the state's Department of Driver's, the governor decided to upgrade thousands of teenager's learner permits to a driver's license, as long as they met certain conditions. This measure could help with the backlog of road test requests, but it could also put teenagers' lives and that of other drivers at risk.

Teen driving statistics show that the fatal crash rate per mile driven for teenagers is 3 times higher than that of drivers over 20 years old. One of the main reasons that teenage drivers have a higher risk of being involved in a car crash is their lack of experience behind the wheel.

The state has begun to reopen and thousands of people are coming back to work, this means that there will be more drivers on the road and with this the risk of a car accident increases. Only time will tell if the measures taken during the pandemic result in more teenagers involved in car accidents.
