Atlanta-Area Mosques Open For Hurricane Irma Evacuees
Ten mosques in the Atlanta area, and three more in central and south Georgia, will open their doors to evacuees starting Friday afternoon.
ATLANTA, GA — As evacuees fleeing Hurricane Irma make their way into metro Atlanta from Florida and south Georgia, Muslim places of worship were among the facilities opening their doors to those in need.
Al-Farooq Masjid, the largest mosque in Atlanta, says that 10 congregations in the Atlanta area will be opening as evacuation shelters for Irma evacuees. Most of them will open for registration at 2:45 p.m. Friday, after afternoon prayers, the mosque announced on its website.
Two Islamic centers in the Macon area and one in Savannah also plan on opening their doors to evacuees, the site said, although Savannah is among the coastal communities under a mandatory evacuation order beginning Saturday.
