Census Is Hiring In Gwinnett County For 2020
Gwinnett County is hosting a Census hiring event Wednesday; see what the Census Bureau is paying for temporary positions in the 2020 Census.
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring workers across the United States and Puerto Rico as the agency prepares for the 2020 Census.
According to the agency, most of the job openings are for Census takers, but clerical positions are also available in areas where there are local offices. There are also a few supervisory and recruiting outreach positions.
Pay for the positions varies based on location. In Gwinnett County, positions with the bureau for the 2020 Census pay $20 per hour for Census takers. There are no field offices in the county.

The agency said Census takers are also reimbursed for work-related mileage and expenses.
The Gwinnett County government is hosting representatives from the U.S. Census Bureau at a hiring event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday to highlight local opportunities, answer questions about Census jobs, and accept applications.

The hiring event will take place in the second floor conference area of the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center at 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville.
To apply for temporary work with the agency, potential employees must meet the below qualifications:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a valid Social Security number
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have a valid email address
- Complete an application and answer assessment questions (Some assessment questions are available in Spanish but applicants might also have to take an English proficiency test)
- Be registered with the Selective Service System (the draft) or have a qualifying exemption if you’re a man born after Dec. 31, 1959
- Pass a Census-performed criminal background check and a review of criminal records, including fingerprinting
- Be available to work flexible hours, including days, evenings and weekends

The bureau said most employees are required to have access to a car and have a valid driver’s license unless there is public transportation available. Workers also should have access to a computer with internet and an email account.
Those selected for the positions can start seeing job offers between January and April. Training will begin in March and runs through mid-May.
The Census officially kicks off April 1.
The results of the 2020 Census will be used to appropriate federal funding and draw political maps. The questionnaires for the Census have been printed and don’t include a controversial question asking residents their citizenship status.
