Gas Leak Near Major Shopping Area, Restaurant Evacuated

A gas leak Friday afternoon has shut down the intersection of Lawrenceville Suwanee Road and Walther Blvd according to Gwinnett County Fire Lt. Colin Rhoden.

Contractors were digging near the road and hit a gas line.

Fire crews were called to the scene near the Lawrenceville Market Shopping Center shortly after noon. The center houses Target, AMC Colonial 18 and Home Depot among other stores.

Only one business in the area has been closed.

"The IHOP was evacuated because of the proximity of the leak and the business," said Rhoden in a release. "Other businesses are still open and have been monitored by firefighters."

The gas company is currently on the scene working on shutting down the feeds to the leak.

In September, another gas leak nearby shut down Highway 316 and forced the evacuation of part of Georgia Gwinnett College.
