New Gwinnett Braves Name Finalists Announced

The Atlanta Braves' Triple-A farm club in Lawrenceville is changing its name, and fans can vote on their favorite.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — The Gwinnett Lamb Chops? When prospects for the Atlanta Braves work their way up to the Triple-A farm club in Lawrenceville, that could be who they're playing for in coming years.

The Gwinnett Braves are changing their name. And they're letting fans help choose the new name.

On Thursday, the Braves released six finalists out of thousands of entries that were submitted by the public. The finalists are:

  • Gwinnett Big Mouths. Named after the state fish of Georgia, the Big Mouths would be a tribute to bass fishing on Lake Lanier.
  • Gwinnett Buttons. The name would honor Gwinnett County's namesake, Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia.
  • Gwinnett Gobblers. According to the team, the name Gobblers celebrates "the outdoors, hunting and eating all the foods we love in the state of Georgia."
  • Gwinnett Hush Puppies. A popular seafood side or a quiet canine companion?
  • Gwinnett Lamb Chops. The Lambchops name would "marry the region's love of home cooking with the Tomahawk Chop of the Atlanta Braves," the team says.
  • Gwinnett Sweet Teas. The name would be a celebration of the laid-back lifestyle and a regional beverage icon.

From now through July 24,fans can go to the Gwinnett Braves website and cast a vote to provide input on the name that the team will adopt in 2018.

"Please remember we are looking for a new name that communicates the family fun entertainment we're known for while paying tribute to the stories of our community," the club says on the site.
