Tilted Kilt Shut Down After Second Failed Inspection

Cockroaches in the kitchen helped seal the deal for the Gwinnett County location of the sports pub chain.

SUWANEE, GA — A Gwinnett County location of sports pub chain Tilted Kilt has been shut down by health inspectors after failing its second inspection in a row.

The Suwanee location of the pub, best known for its provocatively dressed "Kilt Girls," will have to score at least an 80 on a follow-up inspection to get its suspended license reinstated.

The restaurant earned a failing 61/U on an inspection Thursday. That's after getting an even lower 50/U on an inspection last Monday. It also failed an inspection in May, earning a 67/U.

During Thursday's inspection, cockroaches were spotted throughout the kitchen. Inspectors said they saw both adult cockroaches and nymphs. (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Or, if you have an iPhone, download the free Patch app.)

Spilled food was found on the floor of the cooking area, there were holes found in the ceiling and walls, food that had been delivered the night before was being stored on the floor and raw eggs were being stored above ready-to-eat food.

A vegetable-preparation sink was being used to store racks from the dishwasher, grease and other debris had built up on cook line equipment and there was ice buildup spotted on a freezer door. Additionally, there was no documentation that 10 out of 24 employees had received training on food safety procedures.

The restaurant's license was suspended because it earned failing grades on two consecutive inspections. When a restaurant fails an inspection, inspectors return within 10 days and the restaurant is required to have fixed the problems that were originally cited.

In a post on its Facebook page Thursday, the restaurant apologized for being closed "due to recent events." The post said the pub will not open again until possibly Saturday.

"We are taking every precaution to make sure all of our guests are given the best experience every time they visit," the pub's management team wrote. "Due to this, we will be retraining staff amongst other things for the next 2 days."

The Tilted Kilt will not be allowed to re-open until it has corrected the problems noted in Thursday's report. The restaurant is located at 1500 Satellite Blvd. in Suwanee.
