Berkmar High Garners Two Top Sportsmanship Awards

is among two Gwinnett County schools recently recognized for its well-regarded sportsmanship.

Sportsmanship displayed during athletic events earned the Lilburn school recognition from the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) and Georgia’s EMCs (Electric Membership Cooperatives). Both organizations presented the Berkmar High Patriots with the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship award, according to a press release from the Gwinnett County Public Schools. 

It honors student athletes and supporters for "exhibiting exceptional sportsmanship" in competition, the press release stated. 

Duluth High School was the other program recognized.

"This award is not only an honor for the individual school, but also recognition for the community as whole," said Mike Emery, the school district’s director of athletics, in the press release. "It reinforces the GHSA philosophy that 'students, athletes, coaches, spectators and all others associated with high school activities programs should adhere to the fundamental values of respect, fairness, honesty and responsibility.'"

The GHSA selected winners based on the sportsmanship demonstrated by school communities in the 2011-2012 school year. Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Awards are awarded annually to the GHSA-member high schools in the 40 regions from the five classifications by representatives from the EMCs during fall athletic events and school assemblies.

Berkmar High is recognized within Region 8-AAAAA, and Duluth High received its award among Region 7-AAAAA competitors.

The GHSA and EMCs have recognized school communities for their exemplary behavior since 2006.
