Joe's Crab Shack Fails Restaurant Inspection

The Lilburn location had failed an inspection before, in 2014.

LILBURN, GA -- A host of problems led to a failing grade for the Joe’s Crab Shack in Lilburn on its most recent restaurant inspection.

The restaurant, on Stone Mountain Highway, got a 64 after a January 21 inspection by the state health department.

Among the problems inspectors noted were dishes that had been put away clean that had dried food debris on them and multiple bottles of chemicals that had no labels saying what the chemicals were.

An employee was spotted handling dirty dishes, then clean ones, without washing hands in between and two sinks for hand-washing didn’t have paper towels.

The person in charge couldn’t answer basic questions about health policy, some items in a cooler were being stored above the recommended 41 degrees and multiple food items, including crab and shrimp, were not date-marked.

Each item on an inspection form has a point value ranging from 1 to 9 points, with violations deducting points from a best possible score of 100.

Higher points are taken for items with higher risk to cause illness, while repeat violations take even more points.

Letter grades assigned are A for totals of 100 to 90 points, B for 89 to 80, C for 79 to 70, and U for less than 70.

Joe’s Crab Shack’s last few inspections had been better, with the location earning A’s or B’s for the past couple of years. But it’s not the first time it’s failed an inspection.

The location was given another 64 after a May 23, 2014 inspection.
