For the first time in the school’s 24-year history, a varsity football squad will be taking the field for Providence Christian Academy in what has been a long-awaited season for the school’s growing football program.
The Providence Storm’s season opener this Friday night will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Lilburn-based Christian school, which now competes in 17 varsity sports and has produced several state championship teams. The Storm plays at St. Francis High School in Alpharetta at 7:30 p.m.

Preparation for this inaugural varsity football season has been underway for a number of years. The program began in 2011 with a middle school team. A year later the JV squad was added and this year features both a middle school and varsity team.
“It was five years ago when we knew it was time to start a football program at Providence,” said Athletic Director Michael Woods. “In spite of the many start-up obstacles and challenges that we faced back then, I knew this day would finally come and how rewarding it would be for our players, coaches and parents to experience the excitement of how Friday night varsity football would help us build upon our school community.”

The school’s football program is driven in part by the experience level of the coaching staff. Three Providence football coaches played Division I football in the SEC and all went on to play in the NFL, including Head Coach Ken Robinson who played for the Washington Redskins.
“As we begin our inaugural varsity football season, I am excited about the opportunities and challenges for our young men,” said Head Coach Ken Robinson. “On the field they are learning that football is not merely about the physical, but about opportunities for training in brotherly love, in courage, in grit, in toughness, in competitive fight, and in overcoming fear and doubt. Our team slogan is to ‘win the battle within,’ and that is what we’ll work hard to do this year.”
The varsity football program is the latest expansion for Providence, which is known for offering rigorous academics, arts and athletics programs in addition to a strong emphasis on spiritual growth, leadership and service to others.
