Chattahoochee Tech Veterans Dept Holds Flag Retirement Ceremony

From Chattahoochee Tech: Chattahoochee Technical College’s Veteran Services department held a flag retirement ceremony at the Marietta Campus on June 14.

Flag burning takes place when an American flag is deemed too marred and tattered to continue to fly. Because it is never acceptable for Old Glory to be thrown away, as it would be a sign of disrespect, the American flag is instead burned – a more honorable option. The flag burning service began with reciting the national anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Veteran Services Coordinator Dr. Barry Munday followed with a reading of the poem “I Am Old Glory” and Staff Sgt. Carol Doemel of the Georgia Army National Guard’s 116th Army Band performed both the national anthem and taps.

The Bartow-Etowah Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron 129 retired the flag to close the ceremony, which included cutting and removing all stripes from the flag as well as the field of blue stars and placing them in a fire.
