Cobb, Marietta Schools Make Decision On Tuesday Classes

A winter storm is approaching metro Atlanta, and could bring up to 2 inches of snow throughout the region on Tuesday.

MARIETTA, GA -- Cobb County and city of Marietta schools will be closed Tuesday as a winter storm approaches metro Atlanta that could bring up to 2 inches of snow. Cobb joins the city of Atlanta and DeKalb and Fulton counties to cancel Tuesday classes. All county offices and courts will be closed on Tuesday as well, beginning at 6 am. Officials said their reopening will depend on how quickly conditions improve.

"With a great deal of uncertainty about the timing and amount of snow, we thought this proactive action would be best to ensure the safety of Cobb County workers," said County Manager Rob Hosack.

Cobb DOT workers, however, will remain on the job. Road Maintenance Director Dallas Cain said crews spent the weekend preparing equipment and will start pre-treating roads around sunrise on Tuesday. Crews will then work 12-hour shifts until the event is over. Cain says they will use a sand/salt mixture to treat known trouble-spots across Cobb County including curves, areas typically covered by shade, bridges, and overpasses.

National Weather Service forecasters expect the rapidly-moving system to leave as much as one inch of snow in the Cobb County area, with isolated heavier amounts possible. Temperatures will decrease as the front passes, leaving behind the worry that black ice spots will make travel hazardous.

All campuses of Chattahoochee Technical College will be closed as well.
