The accident occurred in front of Lindley Middle School in Mableton, say media reports.

COBB COUNTY, GA — A school crossing guard was struck and killed by a vehicle while directing traffic Thursday morning, according to media reports. A Cobb County schools spokesman said the incident occurred at about 9 a.m. at Lindley Middle School on Veterans Memorial Parkway in Mableton.

Students arriving for classes saw the incident and its aftermath, according to media reports. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB-TV Channel 2 identified the crossing guard as Edna Umeh of Mableton. As of Thursday, the Cobb County schools had not confirmed the crossing guard's name.

A Cobb police spokesman said she was “well known” to students and school staff, the AJC reported.

Witnesses and police said that the driver of a red Ford Focus swerved on Veterans Memorial Parkway and then hit the crossing guard, say media reports. He was injured in the collison, and a Cobb fire crew had to cut off the top of his car to free him.

Grief counselors from Lindley Middle School and the Cobb school district were at the scene to help students, teachers and staff, the AJC reported.
