Muslim and Refugee Rally Saturday in Midtown Atlanta

Interfaith event could draw thousands in opposition to President Donald Trump's controversial travel and immigration ban.

MIDTOWN, GA — More than 2,000 have RSVP'd for an interfaith rally in support of the Muslim community and refugees after a controversial travel ban ordered by President Donald Trump. "Atlanta Stands with Muslims and Refugees" will be from noon until 3 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

On Friday, a federal judge in Washington state put a temporary halt on enforcement of Trump's executive order on immigration. The president had sought to prevent entry into the U.S. of any immigrants from seven countries that are majority Muslim, as well as a 4-month ban on refugees and an indefinite ban on refugees from war-torn Syria, in particular.

The White House stated Friday night that it will fight the judge's preliminary injunction. And Trump blasted the judge's decision Saturday morning, writing on Twitter that, "The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!"

The "Atlanta Stands" event page on Facebook currently has 2,200 who have said they would be attending. The church is located at 731 Peachtree Street, NE. There is no parking on site, so participants have been encouraged to take MARTA, bike or carpool.

"We are asking that you bring a personal letter about why you think the Muslim ban is un-American," organizer Aisha Yaqoob wrote on Facebook. "Letters will be collected at the event and delivered to the U.S. Department of State."

As many as 2,000 protested the ban last weekend at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, with chants that included, "No hate, no fear. Refugees are welcome here."
