Tornado Risk, Hazardous Weather Outlook Issued For Georgia

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the Atlanta region with a risk of tornadoes and strong winds.

ATLANTA, GA — The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the Atlanta region with a risk of tornadoes and damaging winds. Isolated severe storms are possible for portions of central Georgia Sunday night from about 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Light snow is possible in far north portions of the state on Monday.

Bands of heavy rain will produce a half an inch to 1.5 inches of rain across north and central Georgia. Up to 2 inches of rain will be possible across northeast Georgia, where isolated areas of minor flooding are possible, the NWS said.

Heavy rain will develop across the area late Sunday afternoon and evening with total rainfall up to 1.5 inches over far north Georgia. Most areas will see less than an inch of rain. No flooding is
expected at this time, the weather service said.

Isolated severe storms are also expected mainly over middle Georgia between 10 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday. Damaging winds and a brief tornado will be possible with the stronger storms.

As the storm system leaves the area, light snow will be possible across far north Georgia Monday afternoon and overnight and could produce light accumulations less than 1 inch and some hazardous driving conditions, especially in elevations above 2000 feet, the NWS said. Blustery winds Monday night and Tuesday morning will also drop wind chill values to the teens and lower 20s.

Sunday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 5pm. High near 59. East wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 3am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3am. Low around 43. East wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7am, then a slight chance of showers between 7am and 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 41 by 5pm. West wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 41. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Tuesday Night: Clear, with a low around 26.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 51.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 30.

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 54.

Thursday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Friday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 52.

Friday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 36.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 48.
