2012 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere

#nb-24-14

Almost anyone can find a decent bottle of red wine to go with steak, if they are willing to pay in excess of twenty dollars.  The real trick, however, is to find a decent bottle of wine for dinner for ten dollars or less.  For about ten years now, I have been able to do that with ease, just by picking up a bottle of Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo, which can be had readily from a variety of retailers.  Concha y Toro is an old established winery from Chile , which has been making good, affordable red wines for a long time.  The 2012 Casillero del Diablo Carmenere is another fine example of a value priced red from South America's largest winery.  The folks at Concha y Toro also produce a good Cab and a Merlot in the same Cassillero del Diablo line-up.

This Carmenere opens with a fragrant nose of berries and spice, which introduces you to flavors of blueberry, plum, and a little blackberry.  The finish is framed with a touch of mellow oak which trails off into a smooth and lingering aftertaste, with a hint of spice.  The alcohol content is 13.5%.  Norm's score is 86.

We paired the Concha y Toro with a nice thick steak from the grill, but it would also serve well with almost any grilled meat or red-sauced pasta.

Score: 86

Price: $8 - $10
