The new year will see gas prices sitting at their lowest levels in over five years, according to data released by AAA late Sunday.
Georgia’s average gas price was $1.911 on Sunday, down from $1.915 on Saturday and almost three cents cheaper than last week’s average of $1.942. Gas cost $1.986 a month ago and $2.289 a year ago, AAA says.

AAA says that the nation’s average gas price on Jan. 1 is expected to be the lowest price since Jan. 1, 2009. 70 percent of gas stations across the country are now selling gas for under $2 a gallon.
“Gasoline could get even cheaper in the coming weeks, as some of the lowest prices of the year typically arrive in January,” said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins in a statement. “Once the holiday season wraps up, fewer people take long distance road trips, leading to a downturn in demand at a time when supplies are high.”
