River Flood Warning Issued for Alcovy River, Includes Walton and Gwinnett

The National Weather Service has issued a warning for the Alcovy River which affects both Walton and Gwinnett County.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning Sunday for the Alcovy River. The weather service reports that recent heavy rainfall has caused "significant runoff into streams and rivers which will cause flooding in some areas."

The NWS advises that "all persons with interests along the river should monitor the latest forecasts, and be prepared to take necessary precautions to protect life and property."

FORECAST FLOODING INCREASED FROM MINOR TO MODERATE SEVERITY... THE FLOOD WARNING CONTINUES FOR THE ALCOVY RIVER NEAR LAWRENCEVILLE. * UNTIL LATE TONIGHT. * AT 12 PM SUNDAY THE STAGE WAS 10.9 FEET... AND RISING. * MODERATE FLOODING IS FORECAST. * FLOOD STAGE IS 9 FEET. * THE RIVER WILL CONTINUE RISING TO NEAR 11.3 FEET BY THIS AFTERNOON. THE RIVER WILL FALL BELOW FLOOD STAGE THIS EVENING. * AT 11 FEET... MODERATE FLOODING BEGINS. SIGNIFICANT FLOODING EXPANDS FURTHER INTO THE WOODLANDS UPSTREAM AND DOWNSTREAM FROM THE RIVER GAUGE AT NEW HOPE ROAD. THE WATER LEVEL REACHES THE BOTTOM OF THE BRIDGE. COUNTY OFFICIALS MAY NEED TO CLOSE THE BRIDGE DUE TO EROSION TO THE BANKS ON THE SIDES OF THE BRIDGE. * THIS CREST COMPARES TO A PREVIOUS CREST OF 11.2 FEET ON SEP 21 2009.

THE LATEST STAGE DATA WAS FURNISHED IN COOPERATION WITH THE UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.  

Sunday's forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms to continue for much of today. Isolated severe storms, damaging wind gusts, and hail is possible along with lightning.

The NWS has issued a flood watch for much of north and central Georgia through this evening and due to the heavy rains overnight creeks and rivers have rapidly risen across the region with a few creeks and streams will approach or reach flood stage.
