DeKalb Mayor Catches Heat for Selling Lemon Car

The mayor, who is also a pastor, sold a car on Craigslist. He believed a new engine had been installed in the vehicle.

A DeKalb County mayor and pastor says he plans to return a buyer’s money after selling a car on Craigslist that reportedly has a faulty engine.

Lilburn Mayor Johnny Crist advertised a 2006 Volvo as “gorgeous, flawless” online. But, the buyer says his mechanic flagged several problems with the car, including its engine, which could stop running at any time.

“He told me all this stuff about it and it all turned out to be lies,” Gregory Javo, who bought the car, told WSB TV.

Crist told the TV station he was unaware of any problems with the car, and believed it had a new engine installed by a reputable Volvo company. He did not name the business.

While Javo says he should have had the car examined before the purchase, he trusted Crist.

“I took the car because he is such an honest man,” Javo told WSB. “He even prayed with me for the safety of the car because I told him how much I traveled.”

Crist said he will give Javo his money back.
