In response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis, the leadership and members of Shallowford Presbyterian Church took decisive action this month to assist their neighbors and a group of local nonprofit ministry and mission organizations by giving more than $50,000 in grants. The much-needed money came from a congregational free-will offering along with funds from the church’s mission budget.

Shallowford’s congregation donated $20,248 in less than two-weeks’ time through an impromptu free-will offering to meet the growing local needs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The church divided the funds equally among the four ministries.

The Zo Presbyterian Church will cover costs to continue weekly worship, fellowship, and community outreach. Memorial Drive Ministries will fund efforts to foster diverse Christian worship, innovate community services and transformative relationships in the Clarkston community. Shalom International Ministry will help fund efforts to address the social, economic, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of church members and friends. The Shallowford Compassion Fund will support members and neighbors in need of assistance.

“This crisis has me acutely aware of how much our mission partners and our community need us to live our calling to love our neighbors,” said Rob Pope, chair of Shallowford’s Mission Committee. “Our congregation’s gifts will support our neighbors on the front lines of feeding, clothing, educating, and loving one another through this crisis.”

“We are exceptionally grateful for your support and the difference it is making to so many resettled refugee families,” said David Roth, Executive Director, Memorial Drive Ministries. “

Shallowford’s Mission Forward Fund designated $30,000 from the annual church budget to eight of the church’s local mission partners who are working directly with people most affected by the pandemic and the resulting financial crisis. The partners are: Decatur Cooperative Ministry, LaAmistad (“The Friendship”), LaGonave Haiti Partnership, Memorial Drive Ministries, NETworks Cooperative Ministries, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Shalom International Ministry, and Thornwell Home for Children.
