Do or Die for Lassiter, Pope Softball

The play host to at 2 p.m. today for the final spot in the eight-tem AAAAA softball championship tournament.

Lassiter and Mill Creek split a doubleheader at the Northeast Cobb high school Thursday, the Marietta Daily Journal reported. The Trojans won the opener, 2-1, but lost the second game, 9-2, to force a decisive game today in the best-of-three second-round series.

The winner advances to play on Thursday at the Georgia High School Association championships in Columbus. That tournament is double-elimination and runs through Saturday.

Also qualifying for the eight-team field are , , , , and East Coweta.

Also facing a decisive Game 3 today is , which plays at Northwest Whitfield at 2 p.m. in the AAAA GHSA tournament.

The Lady Greyhounds won the first game on the road Thursday, 4-3, but lost the second, 9-1, the Dalton Daily Citizen reported.

Today’s winner will play Ola on Thursday in Columbus to open the eight-team, double-elimination championship tournament.

Also advancing to Columbus in AAAA are Union Grove, Madison County, Northgate, , Whitewater and .

Madison County earned its trip to Columbus by sweeping on Thursday, 8-5 and 10-2, the Athens Banner-Herald said.

The GHSA volleyball tournaments also are down to the Elite Eight, with the quarterfinals set for Saturday.

Lassiter, seeded fifth in the AAAAA tournament, plays at at 7 p.m. The winner plays either top-seeded , the defending state champion, or eighth-seeded East Coweta on Wednesday at in Lilburn. Those two play at Walton at 3 p.m. Saturday.

On the other half of the bracket, hosts Brookwood at 12:30 p.m., and North Cobb is home against at 6 p.m.

In the AAAA tournament, defending state champion Pope is the top seed and plays at home against Rockdale at 10:30 a.m. for a spot in the semifinals against or McIntosh on Wednesday at Mount Zion High in Jonesboro.

Also in AAAA, is home against Starrs Mill, and Whitewater plays host to Lakeside-DeKalb.
