Homemade Device Explodes at U Pointe Kennesaw

A homemade device exploded last Wednesday as students mingled around the pool at the U Pointe Kennesaw apartments, and Cobb police have the Fayetteville man who allegedly made the device in custody.

About 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, Derrick Fernando Brown allegedly set off the homemade explosive device "to intimidate his friends and other individuals at the pool area," according to a Cobb County criminal warrant.

It's not clear if anyone was injured or why Brown was in the area. Sgt. Dana Pierce, the spokesman for the Cobb County Police Department, said he was looking into the incident.

According to the warrant, Brown wasn't a resident of U Pointe, which is located on the shuttle route to Kennesaw State University. However, he was seen wandering around U Pointe from 11 a.m. May 21 until the time of the explosion.

When Cobb police officers tried to arrest him, Brown allegedly pushed them away. Though he escaped, he was caught a short distance from the scene of the explosion, according to the warrant.

A breath screening test found that Brown had a blood alcohol level of .08, according to the warrant.

He is in the Cobb County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $50,000 bond on charges that include use of destructive device to kill, injure, intimidate or destroy builidngs; terroristic threats and acts; loitering or prowling; willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer; reckless conduct; and possession of alcoholic beverages by persons below legal age.
