Kell's Jordan Chambers Wins 2 Golds

Pope leads the state AAAA track meet after Day 1 behind Patrick Fleming's win in the 1,600 meters.

Jordan Chambers picked up in the Georgia High School Association’s AAAA boys track and field meet where in the girls meet last week: winning gold medals for the Longhorns.

Chambers won the discus and shot put Thursday on Day 1 of the state meet in Jefferson—both in dramatic fashion.

His throw of 54 feet, 1.5 inches in the shot put was a quarter-inch better than Dewey Hilliard of Ware County.

In the discus, the opening event of the meet, he was only fifth after an opening throw of 142 feet, 4 inches, and that was better than four of his five remaining throws. But he reached 160 feet, 3 inches on his fourth throw, topping Marist’s Kenneth Brinson by almost 2 feet.

Patrick Fleming also is a state champion, winning the 1,600 meters in 4:18.10, almost 1½ seconds ahead of Greenbrier’s Brandon Combs.

Pope’s Marco Vahoua finished 10th in the discus at 141 feet, 8 inches and fourth in the shot put at 52 feet, 9 inches. Kell’s Chris Gaines was 10th in the shot put at 47 feet, 11.5 inches.

In other AAAA finals Thursday:

  • Pope’s Austin Card finished second in the high jump at 6 feet, 6 inches, matching the height of winner Jalen Langston of .
  • In the long jump, Pope’s Myles Everett was fourth at 23 feet, 3 inches, and Kell’s Devon Williams was sixth at 22 feet, 7.25 inches.
  • Pope’s Nick Tuz cleared 10 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to finish 15th.
  • Kell’s Quincy Mauger was 12th in the triple jump at 43 feet.

Pope finished Day 1 of the three-day meet in first overall with 28 points; Kell is tied for third with 23.

In the AAAAA meet, Alex Mattle finished eighth in the shot put at 48 feet, 2.5 inches.

The competition moves entirely to the track today with preliminary races to set the fields for Saturday’s finals, which will stream live at GHSA.tv at 12:50 p.m. You also can follow live results.

The only medals being won today are in the 3,200 meters. Pope’s Fleming is seeded 10th in the AAAA race in his quest to be a double champion.
