Lassiter, Pope Lose Lacrosse Titles

Lassiter came back from four goals behind in the third quarter and a two-goal deficit in the final five minutes to force overtime. But Evans Lockwood scored in sudden-death overtime to give the Georgia High School Association AAAAA title, 10-9.

Garrett Shank scored four goals for Lassiter, including one with 55 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 9 after Milton took a 9-7 lead with five minutes left. He also scored the Trojans’ eighth goal.

Lassiter trailed 6-3 at halftime and 7-3 early in the third quarter but charged back to tie the score at 7 in front of a frenzied home crowd at The Frank.

It was the second loss to Milton this year for Lassiter, which ended the year with a 16-3 record and the Area 2-AAAAA title under first-year coach Brendan Leezer.

Lassiter also lost to Milton in the 2010 championship game, The Marietta Daily Journal said.

Pope’s loss wasn’t as dramatic as Lassiter’s but also was close as the Greyhounds fell at in the GHSA A-AAAA title game for the second consecutive year, 10-7.

Pope scored first on a goal by Brayton Wadella, Chas Arnold reported on Twitter, but Lambert netted the next four goals and never lost the lead.

The Greyhounds trailed 6-4 at halftime and 8-5 after the third quarter.

Wadella, Brandon Toller and Zack Powers each scored twice for Pope, the MDJ said.

Pope finished the season 17-4-1.
