Lassiter Softball Wins Region Title

Pope also qualified for the state tournament with a perfect game on Friday.

For the second year in a row, Lassiter and Pope will represent East Cobb in the state high school softball tournament.

The Lassiter Lady Trojans defeated Cherokee 3-0 on Friday to win the Region 5-AAAAAA advance to the Georgia High School Association state softball tournament that begins next week. 

Lassiter, which is 25-5 on the season, won a region title for the third time in the last five years, according to the MDJ. The Lady Trojans, who are ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA, reached the state Elite Eight a year ago and will be starting state play next week at home. 

The Pope softball team, which reached the Class AAAAA finals a year ago, also advanced to the state tournament by beating Cambridge 5-0 Friday. 

The 10th-ranked Lady Greyhounds, who are 24-8, got a perfect game from pitcher Kelly Barnhill. 

Other East Cobb teams didn't fare so well this season. Walton and Wheeler brought up the bottom of Region 5-AAAAAA, finishing with records of 3-20 and 5-8, respectively, according to ga.prepcountry.com. 

In Region 7-AAAAA, where Pope plays, Sprayberry was 12-16 and Kell was 5-16.

The Walker School was 3-11 in Region 6B-A.
