UNC Assault Investigation Finds Player From Marietta Broke No Rules: Attorney

UNC found no violation in its investigation of alleged sexual assault involving suspended player Allen Artis, his attorney says.

NORTHEAST COBB, GA -- A suspended University of North Carolina football player from Marietta may be cleared of sexual battery allegations after school officials found no violation of campus policy, Patch has learned.

Allen Artis was notified by the university that his contact with a female student was not a violation, his attorney said this week, according to multiple news accounts.

Artis is facing misdemeanor charges of misdemeanor assault and sexual battery. He is also looking at expulsion if it is proved that he committed the alleged crime.

Additionally, WGCL-TV in Atlanta reported that lawyers from both sides agree that the school's own investigation concluded that Artis broke no rules.

Artis, a linebacker and 2014 graduate from Wheeler High School, was suspended indefinitely in September 2016 after Delaney Robinson said that he sexually assaulted her at an apartment when she was intoxicated and could not consent.

While Patch does not usually name alleged rape victims, Robinson held a news conference last year to publicly identify herself and draw attention to the case.

The case delved into controversy last year when Robinson's attorney claimed that the Orange County assistant district attorney told her that, “Unconsciousness is rape, blackout drunk is not rape.”

Artis has consistently said that his contact with Robinson was consensual.

UNC-Chapel Hill’s vice chancellor of communications, Joel Curran, said Thursday that the university could not comment on a specific case.
“While attorneys may make public claims on behalf of their clients and their clients may speak on their own behalf, we are obligated to follow a process that protects our students’ privacy rights,” Curran said, according to the Charlotte News & Observer.

While UNC officials are still reacting to the latest developments, Artis remains indefinitely suspended from the team.
