The Oconee County Senior Center will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, July 27, at 10 a.m. to celebrate the official start of construction on the center’s expansion. The Senior Center received a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in October to expand the current facility to continue to meet the needs of the county’s older adults. Oconee County is one of 58 communities in Georgia that received federal community development assistance through the CDBG program administered through the state Department of Community Affairs. Construction is expected to be complete in the fall of 2022.

The Senior Center will add a health and wellness center, as well as additional space for arts and recreational activities. The expansion project is necessary to accommodate the center’s growing clientele and will provide much-needed floor space to create a safer, more accessible area for fitness and exercise programs. The expansion will also allow the center to offer expanded programming that will provide respite to family caregivers, enrich the lives of older adults living with dementia, and increase available space for a variety of activities.

“We are thrilled to be able to grow our space and offerings for older adults in our community,” said Senior Center Director Merry Howard. “This expansion project will allow us to bring our vision for a thriving and vibrant Senior Center with a broad spectrum of activities to life.”
