UGA Police: 11 Fraternity Members Charged with Hazing

Several members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity at the University of Georgia face hazing charges, according to police and media reports.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported 11 members of the Zeta Iota chapter of the fraternity allegedly beat pledges as part of an initiation process. UGA Police said in its daily log that the incidents occurred between 10 a.m. Jan. 27 and 2 a.m. Jan. 28. The agency issued warrants for the arrests of 11 students, all male.

Clarke County jail records listed only 10 suspects having been booked Friday morning.

The warrants were issued on Feb. 6 after a university official reported “an incident believed to constitute hazing,” according to police records.

“There were a number of activities where pledges were being struck by fists,” UGA police chief Jimmy Williamson told the Banner-Herald. None of the pledges required medical treatment.
