Suspected Driver in Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Run Calls Police, Gets Arrested

The Monday incident on Boggs Road was the third pedestrian fatality in 3 weeks that involved a hit-and-run driver, Gwinnett Police say.

Gwinnett Police have arrested the suspected hit-and-run driver involved in a fatal pedestrian accident on Boggs Road Monday night.

Police said in a Wednesday news release Jhonatan Romero-Alvarez (first name spelling via police and jail records) has been charged with vehicular homicide and hit-and-run in connection with the incident that killed Dante Wilson, 22, of Lawrenceville, around 9:45 p.m. on Boggs Road near Interstate 85.

Wilson was struck by three vehicles as he crossed the road from the Autumn Vista apartment complex to the Magnolia Pointe apartment complex in the Duluth area. Police said two of the three vehicles stopped at the scene. The third, a maroon Honda, fled without stopping to render aid or call 911.

Police said Wilson was struck by the passenger-side mirror of the Honda, then by the other two vehicles while he was in the roadway.

Romero-Alvarez, 23, also of Lawrenceville, called 911 Tuesday around 7:30 p.m. to say he wanted to speak with police about the accident, GCPD Public Information Officer Cpl. Michele Pihera said. The lead investigator met with the suspect at a location on Sentinel Circle in unincorporated Lawrenceville.

After the meeting, Romero-Alvarez was arrested.

His maroon 2008 Honda Civic was impounded by police.

The accident was the third pedestrian fatality involving a hit-and-run vehicle since Oct. 6, police said.

Amber Harding of Tucker was killed on Oct. 6 as she crossed the road near South Norcross Tucker and Graves roads. Hakeem Dure Temple of Lilburn was charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the accident.

On Oct. 22, Sambi Velasquez was struck and killed while crossing the road in the 6000 block of South Norcross Tucker. Manuel Realejeno, who ran from the scene, was arrested and also charged with vehicular homicide.
