Must See: Georgia High School Football Stadium Boasts 'Largest Scoreboard in U.S.'

Norcross High School will bring fans closer to the action with huge new LED video display system.

There may be teams with more Georgia football championships than Norcross High School, but there’s no equal to what’s been erected at one end of Blue Devils Stadium.

On Aug. 19, Norcross High will officially unveil what it is calling the “largest sports and entertainment video display for any high school in the United States” -- a huge LED scoreboard that rivals what you might find at some college stadiums.

The new scoreboard, which is integrated into the school’s stadium, measures 29 feet, 5 inches by 51 feet, 5 inches (1,513 square feet), and its 518,400 pixels and 1,555,200 diodes will treat visitors to the “highest definition display screen for any secondary school entertainment venue,” the school said in a news release.

Fan will see replays and streaming feeds from multiple cameras, complex scoreboard functionality and more.

The cost of the system, paid for with raised funds from the booster club and sponsoring businesses, was just under $1 million.

The video display system will be largely managed by video production students, and serve athletic, school and community events.

“This is more than just a football video screen or scoreboard. It is a multipurpose giant video screen for all sports, events and functions,” said Todd Heller, vice president of Formetco, which manufactured the system and trained the students on how to run it. “It will greatly improve the visitor experience while providing a learning experience for students.”

“This project is an innovative way to communicate with the community and educate the students that will operate the board,” Norcross mayor Bucky Johnson said.

As a high school that benefits from Title I grants, the school said many people thought the idea of a non-essential capital improvement was only a dream. But head coach Keith Maloof and a group of boosters combined their efforts with the city’s support and major contributions from sponsors like Piedmont Bank, Formetco, Akins Ford and Norcross Sports Training Academy to make it happen. Piedmont Bank is the title sponsor.

“It’s amazing how it all came together,” said Maloof, who has coached the Blue Devils to two of the last three state big-school championships. “The end result far exceeded our expectations and we are extremely grateful to everyone involved.”

The school said advertising revenue expected from the new scoreboard will cover system maintenance, and provide funding for school events and needs.

Norcross opens its season Aug. 22 against Valdosta at the Georgia Dome. The Blue Devils’ first home game is Sept. 4 against Milton.
