Peachtree Corners, Other YMCAs Reopen Friday On Limited Basis

The YMCA on Jones Bridge Road will reopen Friday on a limited basis. Be sure to bring a face mask.

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — The Peachtree Corners YMCA on Jones Bridge Road — along with six other metro locations — will reopen Friday on a limited basis, according to an announcement today by the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. The Lawrenceville YMCA and other locations will follow it on May 25, and more locations will reopen on June 1.

What does "limited basis" mean? Well, for one thing, be sure to pack a face mask in your gym bag. And don't expect to swim laps right away, either.

Specifically, only the wellness areas will be open Friday at Peachtree Corners. The following Monday, May 18, lap swim, group exercise and some tennis facilities will be available by online reservation.

Initial reopenings will include regular temperature checks, designated entries and exits, cleaning and disinfecting of shared surfaces and spaces, social distancing, spacing of fitness equipment, wearing of masks and controlling traffic patterns inside the facility. All activities will be limited to individual workouts with trained staff enforcing social distancing.

In addition, only 25% of any building's normal capacity will be allowed in at any one time, and members can stay no more than an hour, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Staff will wear masks at all times, and members must wear masks when entering the building or using common areas.

By mid-June, YMCA officials plan to reopen more facilities for broader use. They say they hope to have their operations back to something “similar to YMCA operations pre-COVID-19” by August.

“The health and safety or our Y members, staff and community remains our top priority,” said Lauren Koontz, YMCA of Metro Atlanta president and CEO. “The way we will interact with each other will be different, but what will not change is our members’ ability to connect with others while improving their wellness.”
