Thinking of Cutting Down a Tree in Your Yard? You May Need a Permit

Did you know the city of Peachtree Corners requires a permit to remove some trees?

Even though temperatures are still hovering around the 30s in the mornings, it is spring time. And if you're like a lot of homeowners, you may be making plans to plant flowers, throw down some grass seed - or even tackle larger landscaping projects.

If one of those projects involve the removal of trees on your property, you may want to consult the Peachtree Corners city website and read the "Tree Removal Information for Homeowners" guidelines before pulling out your saw.

A tree removal permit is required under certain circumstances including:

  • If the tree is located in a required zoning buffer, conservation or open space, the Chattahoochee River Corridor or designated tree save area
  • If it is a specimen tree. 

Otherwise homeowners can remove live trees from their property without a permit.

However, if you do remove live trees from your property, you still must keep at least two live trees and any specimen trees located on your lot.

The guidelines provide explanations on:

1. What is a specimen tree
2. How to find out if the tree is in a zoning buffer, conservation or open space
3. How to find out if the tree is located in the Chattahoochee River Corridor or tree-saving area and more.
Also properties zoned commercial, office-institutional, industrial, or multi-family must obtain a Permit in order to remove any trees. Contact the Community Development Department at 678.691.1200.
