April Is School Library Month

School Library Month is the American Association of School Librarians' celebration of school media specialists and school libraries. Every year, school librarians are encouraged to host activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school libraries play in transforming learning. Of course, libraries are called “media centers" now and librarians are called “Media and Technology Specialists" but that doesn't change the fact that the school library is where students learn to be effective users of ideas and information.

“The school librarian's role is to provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library is an integral part of the instructional program and the true hub of the school," said Tammy Kemp, Lead Program Manager for Instructional Technology and Media Services. “We teach all users the skill of locating, evaluating, using and citing information through print and digital resources utilizing a variety of technologies and platforms. Our job is to guide and encourage content while fostering a love of reading so that students, hopefully, develop into lifelong readers!"

The American Association of School Librarians began the observance in 1985 to celebrate the role school librarians play in developing reading and learning programs that align with curriculum and keep students engaged. In addition, AASL promotes the individual growth and development of all students, while fostering both excellence and equity in education.
