Georgia Trust Hosts Historic Preservation's Fall Ramble

History enthusiasts will have the opportunity to tour historic private homes and sites in Savannah's early suburbs and historic downtown.

From Georgia Trust: The rich history and architecture of Savannah will be showcased during The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation's Fall Ramble in Savannah, Oct. 6-8, 2017. Originally scheduled for 2016, the Ramble was postponed to 2017 due to Hurricane Matthew.

History enthusiasts will have the opportunity to tour historic private homes and sites in Savannah's early suburbs, its historic downtown, and the lowcountry of the Moon River District. On Friday, Oct. 6, 'ramblers' will explore the grand Colonial Revival and Craftsman homes of Ardsley Park, the palmetto-lined pedestrian mall of Chatham Crescent and the midcentury gems of Kensington Park and Magnolia Park. Guests will spend Saturday, Oct. 7, enjoying beautifully restored homes, award-winning preservation projects, and behind-the-scenes access to historically significant sites in Savannah's Historic Landmark District. On Sunday, Oct. 8, guests will wrap up the Ramble weekend by touring historic waterfront homes on Isle of Hope and learning about the historic Gullah Geechee community in Pin Point.

The Ramble also includes special dining experiences held at historic sites throughout the weekend. On Friday night, 'ramblers' will enjoy cocktails and dinner in the newly rehabilitated Machine Shop at Kehoe Iron Works, a uniquely intact collection of historic industrial buildings just east of Savannah's downtown. Saturday morning, breakfast will take place at the grand Lucas Theatre downtown, where some of Savannah's most eminent authorities on the city's architecture and preservation will give a brief historical orientation. Saturday night, guests will enjoy a traditional lowcountry boil among the moss-covered live oaks at Mary and Howard Morrison's Lebanon Plantation, 2016 recipient of The Georgia Trust's Excellence in Stewardship Award. Before heading off to the Moon River District on Sunday, guests will partake in a coastal brunch along the banks of Shipyard Creek and explore the grounds of historic Bethesda Academy.
