Brookwood Robotics Team Named Tournament Champions

On the weekend of Feb. 24, the Brookwood Robotics team competed in Georgia's last VEX tournament of the year hosted by the Walker School in Marietta, Ga.

After 60 qualifier rounds, one of the school's teams finished first above all other schools, according to team sponsor and Brookwood physics teacher Josh Farrell. All four teams made it into the final tournament rounds.

Brookwood walked away as the tournament champion and received two invitations to the World Tournament event, which will take place later this semester in Anaheim, California. Teams from other states, as well as countries like Saudi Arabia, Australia, China, Japan, will participate. 

The bots were designed to run by remote control as well as autonomously in a 2-on-2 competition, according to Farrell. Each team had to compete in around 15 matches while constantly adjusting, modifying, and fixing the bots in-between. They even helped other teams in need.

"The students all performed admirably, and respectfully, and I am very proud of them," said Farrell.

The final score of the last tournament match was 196 to 6.

The following students built and programmed robots from scratch almost every day after school, and sometimes until 8 or 9 p.m., to compete in a sports-type arena with goals and obstacles.
