SNELLVILLE, GA — Three children and an adult woman died early Saturday morning in a tragic fire in a mobile home community in Snellville.

The fire broke out some time before 2:19 a.m., at which time a police officer in the area noticed the blaze and called firefighters to the home in the 4200 block of Smokecreek Parkway SW.

When firefighters arrived at the home a short time later, they found a single-story mobile home with flames showing through the roof, Gwinnett Fire & Emergency Services said in a news release.

Firefighters tried to enter the home to fight the fire but were overcome by smoke and heat, so they began dousing the blaze through the home's front door.

At the same time, other firefighters entered one of the home's side windows using a ladder.

Once inside, firefighters first found two unconscious children, who were taken to paramedics for treatment. Medical workers attempted to rescue the children but found they had died from their injuries.

Firefighters then found a third child and an adult woman who were already dead, the release stated. Fire officials had not released the names or ages of the victims as of publication.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. Officials said it was evident that the back of the home was badly damaged in the blaze, and evidence shows the blaze was advancing toward the front of the home when firefighters intervened.

All told, three fire engines, one ladder truck, one squad, one air and light truck, two medical units, two battalion chiefs, one district chief and three fire investigators responded to the home.

In the release, fire officials reminded residents to install smoke detectors and prepare an escape plan should a fire occur.

"Firefighters would like to remind families the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes," the release reads. "Working smoke alarms should be installed on each level of the home. Families should also create a home fire escape plan. A home fire drill should be practiced at least twice a year."
