Restaurant Inspection: Failing Grade For Snellville Chinese Spot

Inspectors say employees were handling food with their bare hands and that a live roach was spotted in the kitchen.

SNELLVILLE, GA -- A Chinese restaurant in Snellville earned a failing grade on a restaurant inspection Tuesday.

China Chef, in the shopping center at 2420 Wisteria Dr., got a 55-U on its inspection report.

The report includes a lengthy list of problems found at the restaurant during a five-hour inspection.

Health inspectors said that employees were handling food, in this case, egg rolls, with their bare hands instead of wearing gloves.

Food was not being cooked the proper length of time, or to the proper temperatures, to avoid the possibility of causing illness, the report says.

And it was being stored improperly, too. Inspectors say they found raw beef being stored above other, ready-to-eat food and unwashed zucchini was being stored above washed lettuce.

Inspectors said they also spotted a live roach in the kitchen.

Mold was found on the inside of an ice machine, an appointed safety manager at the restaurant didn't know basic food safety information and the restaurant didn't have cleanup supplies on hand in the event a customer or employee becomes physically ill in the restaurant.

Clean plates were spotted being stored in dirty containers, wet wiping cloths were left laying on counters, and containers of salt, sugar and MSG had not labels noting what was inside.

China Chef had just opened in April and this was its first routine inspection since then. It had earned a 100-A on its opening inspection, the report said.

Inspectors said a follow-up inspection will be scheduled for some time in the next 10 days. The restaurant's food-service permit could be suspended if all violations aren't corrected.
