3 Tips For Working With A Graphic Designer

As I work with more and more entrepreneurs and small organizations, I've learned that not many people have experience working with a graphic designer. Every designer's style and work flow is different – but here are a few tips general tips so you will know what to expect!

  1. Be prepared, and communicate. Hopefully your designer will have a consult call with you, or give you a form of some kind to get all the details – target audience, color scheme, your ideas, etc. Be detailed, be specific, and communicate all of your thoughts and intentions. Before a designer starts your project, they'll most likely need any text and images that will be used in your project. Having things ready beforehand will make the process go much quicker!
  2. Follow basic copyright rules. If your company sells an array of brands, we cannot simply just use their logo off Google Images. You'll need to get permission! Also, designers cannot (or rather, should not) blatantly copy another person's design. You may be able to show examples of design styles you like, but do not send a design and ask us make yours look like it!
  3. Have a dialogue. Don't be afraid to ask questions, give feedback or share your own ideas. The project is for YOUR organization, and it needs to accurately reflect you. If you get confused by something the designer did, or you want to try a different approach – don't be afraid to bring it up.
    • Some good questions to ask might include:
      • Have you done this type of project before? How many times?
      • Am I allotted a certain amount of hours or revisions?
      • How much do extra revisions cost?
      • How long will this project take you?
      • Is printing (or hosting, if it's a website) included?
      • How do I get my final files?
      • What is your cancellation policy?
      • What does your payment schedule look like?
