Eggciting News--Emus Hatching at the Sharon Elementary School Science Lab!

It's not unusual to see a variety of insects, reptiles, birds, and amphibians at Sharon Elementary School's Science Lab, but this year is even more 'emusing'!
This spring's life cycle study is all about emu's (emew or emoo). Emu's are the second largest bird in the world. Sharon Science Lab has been incubating 4 emu eggs since the beginning of March. Emu eggs are very large and weigh an average of 650 grams. Unlike chicken eggs which incubate for 21 days, emu eggs take 50-55 days to hatch. Hatching began yesterday evening and it can take several hours for the chick to emerge from the egg. The emu chicks will live in the science lab until the end of this school year and then will move to their new farm home.
