Roadwork Set Monday Night For Suwanee Dam Road

The construction is part of the widening of State Route 20 in Gwinnett County.

SUWANEE, GA — Drivers on Suwanee Dam Road near Sugar Hill will encounter delays Monday evening as the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation shifts traffic to complete roadwork in the area.

The crews will be aligning the intersection with State Route 20 -- part of that highway's widening.

The traffic shift is scheduled for between 8 p.m. and midnight Monday and will impact about a third of a mile of roadway.

Access to all side streets will be open and flaggers will be on site to help guide traffic.

"Traffic shifts can be inconvenient to drivers and we work to keep them to a minimum," Gwinnett County Department of Transportation Director Alan Chapman said in a news release. "But it means work is getting done."

The Gwinnett County construction on State Route 20 stretches about four miles, from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Burnette Trail.

Access to the Chattahoochee River bridge will be maintained at all times as Georgia DOT contractors work on a separate project to widen across the river into Forsyth County. Gwinnett County worked with the Georgia DOT to complete the engineering on both projects.

Federal, state and local dollars were used to fund these projects. Just across the river, Forsyth County is partnering with the state to widen from James Burgess Road to Samples Road.

Construction on Gwinnett’s section of the project is expected to be complete by early next year, according to Chapman. The Georgia DOT section is to be complete by mid-2017.
