2019 Tucker High School Girls Tennis: An Elite Team

Tucker High Tennis Lady Tigers With Come From Behind Sweet 16 Win Over Greenbrier High To Face Cambridge High School in GHSA Playoff Elite 8

The 2019 Tucker High School Lady Tigers Tennis Team completed a come back win against Greenbrier High School from Evans, Georgia on Monday at Sugar Creek Tennis Center in Decatur, GA. Sophomore Singles player Trinyty Turner rallied from a one set deficit to clinch a 3-2 Tucker win over Greenbrier in the Class 6A girls' state playoffs. The Lady Tigers got off to a very slow start. Greenbrier won both doubles lines 6-0, 6-0 placing the Lady Tigers in a deep hole of having to win all three singles lines. Tucker's doubles teams of Leah Whitmoyer, CiCi Ahmed, Lya Gonzalez, and Ruth Par fought hard but were playing without their leader in Senior Captain Jade Wurapa.

Momentum started to turn for the Tucker Lady Tigers with junior Summer Clemons sprinting out to an early first set 6-0, and then winning five straight games in the second set. Summer held on to win the Singles 1 line second set 7-5 after a charging Greenbrier Wolfpack Nidia Constantin worked to pull the match even. Freshman Wynter Clemons on the next court over also battled intensely with Greenbrier player Maddy Dresser, and the younger Clemons duo won line two singles 6-2, 6-4.

All of the players, coaches, and spectators then moved to watch court number three where Tucker's Trinyty Turner and Greenbrier's Amber Lyons would decide the entire Sweet 16 match winner. Turner jumped out to an early 2-0 first set lead, but Lyons fought back to win the first set 6-4.

Turner then went to work and dominated the second set winning five straight games to take a commanding second set lead of 5-0, winning the second set 6-1. This set the stage for a rare and thrilling third set of high school state playoff tennis with an Elite 8 birth on the line. Turner and Lyons held serve in the third set until 3-2, but that's when Turner was able to win three straight games to end the set, win the line singles 3 match, and clinch the overall match for the Lady Tigers 3-2.

The 18-2 Tucker Lady Tigers Tennis team moves on to play in the GHSA Elite 8 for the second consecutive year and will face a tremendous challenge with Cambridge High School Thursday, April 25th 5:00pm at the Cambridge High School Tennis Courts.
