Granny Gem Thief Doris Payne Arrested At DeKalb Walmart

Doris Payne, 86, is accused of shoplifting $86.22 worth of items from Walmart on Chamblee Tucker Road in DeKalb County

TUCKER, GA — A notorious 86-year-old jewel thief, well known to metro Atlanta authorities, is evidently at it again. Doris Payne, whose more than 60-year life of crime has been canonized in a Netflix documentary, has been busted by DeKalb authorities. But in a change of pace, the active octogenarian is not being accused of hitting an upscale establishment this time. Authorities said Payne was arrested Monday night in a DeKalb Walmart.

Payne shoplifted $86.22 worth of items from Walmart on Chamblee Tucker Road, according to WSB-TV. (Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Or, if you have an iPhone, download the free Patch app.)

In March, Payne was banished from setting foot in any mall in DeKalb, a rule she was evidently trying to keep. "You are banned from Von Maur, any location, not just in DeKalb County," DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Linda Hunter told Payne. "You cannot return not only to Perimeter Mall but you cannot shop at any DeKalb County mall."

On Monday about 5 p.m. police were called to the Walmart after Payne tried to hide several items from the store's pharmacy, produce and electronics departments, WSB reports.

It is unclear what the new arrest means for the terms of her three-year probation.

Payne has a long and notorious rap sheet, gilded in her penchant for expensive stores and uncanny ability to get out of serving hard time. She has been wanted in several states and even internationally for shoplifting and other offenses. Her exploits border on the comical – she reportedly pulled off a heist in Switzerland and escaped "through cornfields" — to the improbable — she once claimed to have lifted a 10-carat, $545,000 diamond ring out of Monte Carlo in the early 1970s.

In 2013, a documentary was done on her life, appropriately titled "The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne." It is currently on Netflix.
