Granny Thief Was Wearing Ankle Monitor At DeKalb Walmart: Police

Doris Payne, 86, was arrested this week for allegedly shoplifting more than $80 worth of items from Walmart on Chamblee.

CHAMBLEE, GA -- A notorious 86-year-old thief, well known for her penchant to lift expensive items from upscale stores, was wearing some more modest jewelry during her latest arrest, Patch has learned. Doris Payne was arrested Monday evening in Chamblee after allegedly stealing more than $80 worth of items.

Payne, whose more than 60-year life of crime has been canonized in a Netflix documentary, went to the cash register and paid for some items but tried to walk out of the store with others, according news reports based on interviews with Chamblee law enforcement authorities. Payne has a long and notorious rap sheet, gilded in her penchant for expensive stores and uncanny ability to get out of serving hard time. She has been wanted in several states and even internationally for shoplifting and other offenses. Her exploits border on the comical -- she reportedly pulled off a heist in Switzerlandand escaped "through cornfields" -- to the improbable -- she once claimed to have lifted a 10-carat, $545,000 diamond ring out of Monte Carlo in the early 1970s.

In March, Payne was banished from setting foot in any mall in DeKalb, a rule she was evidently trying to keep. In that case, she pleaded guilty to a felony count of theft by shoplifting in relation to an incident at Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody. She was sentenced to 30 days in jail as part of a three-year probation term. It was reduced to time served.

On Monday about 5 p.m. police were called to the Walmart after Payne tried to hide several items from the store's pharmacy, grocery and electronics departments, WSB reports.

She has been charged with misdemeanor shoplifting, according to DeKalb officials. She bonded out of jail in about three hours.

It is unclear what the new arrest means for the terms of her three-year probation.
