'Miracle Baby': Newborn Found In Gym Bag Outside DeKalb Building

A newborn baby was found Thursday in a gym bag outside a medical building in DeKalb County, Chamblee police said.

CHAMBLEE, GA -- A newborn baby was found early Thursday in a gym bag outside a medical building in DeKalb County, according to Chamblee police. The Chamblee Police Department has launched an investigation to find out who left the infant at the facility.

"Based on the initial timeline of the incident, the medical staff considers the infant boy a miracle child," Chamblee PD said in a Thursday morning Facebook post..

The child was found in a gym bag just after midnight, but authorities looking at surveillance video and conducting interviews with witnesses have determined that the infant was left just outside the front of the clinic Wednesday morning, police said.

The baby's umbilical cord was still attached, according to police. The baby weighs 4.86 pounds and appears to not be full term.

Authorities said that a clinic employee brought the bag inside at some point in the day, but never opened it, mistaking it as the property of a patient.

A Chamblee officer called paramedics, who rushed the baby to Scottish Rite Hospital. The baby, who evidently went all day Wednesday without food and water, is doing well. That's why he's Chamblee police are calling him "Miracle Baby."
